About Bermuda Island

Bermuda IslandThe first thing Berumda will want you to know about their Island is that Bermuda is not a part of the Caribbean. Although a common misconception has many people believing it is, Bermuda is actually hundreds of miles north of the Caribbean situated in a beautiful stretch of Atlantic Ocean, only 650-miles east of North Carolina. A certain bonus in traveling to Bermuda is flight time, since you can reach Bermuda by plane from eastern US cities in under 2-hours.

Although only 20-square miles, the Island of Bermuda has 75-miles of dramatic coastline. Clear rolling waves of the shores make Bermudas coastline ideal for a wide range of water activities from body surfing to kayaking. You can rent most of your sporting equipment from beach stands, often in the form of vans brimming with equipment such as snorkel gear, boogie boards, kayaks, even beach umbrellas which are recommended under the strong rays of Bermuda sun. If your looking for a more secluded beach, Bermuda has these as well. You will not find the same amenities at these beaches, but some travelers prefer the tranquility of these scarcely populated stretches.

Bermuda has a definite British presence in its traditions such as cricket matches and afternoon teas, and its incredible attention to detail and professionalism in hospitality. Its rolling landscape is scattered with picturesque pastel cottages that portray exactly what Bermuda is… unique and inviting in every way.

In Hamilton you’ll find the most activity on the Island. Serving as Bermudas capital, it is also the Islands commercial center, and while not too large, it is certainly the center of Bermuda’s energy. Referred to simply as “town” by virtually all locals, the heart of the city is Front St., which provides an enjoyable spot for dining beneath a veranda and simply watching the daily activities of Hamilton. You will find that no matter what you do in Bermuda, things are a little more relaxed, and it is the job of anyone visiting to slow down, breath, and enjoy.

There are plenty of day activities to experience in Bermuda. For an underwater trip, Cristobal Colon, a Spanish liner that sailed the seas in 1936, is the largest ship ever to wash up to Bermuda and makes for an excellent diving adventure now sitting in 50-feet of water. Additionally, a Norwegian cargo ship which mistakenly followed the Cristobal Colon now lies with her, making this diving trip a double treat. The cargo ship even has a fire truck it was delivering to Bermuda still sitting on its deck!

South Shore park, a coastal reserve, provides a coastal trail that travels 12 beaches which range vastly in size. If you trek along this path, you’ll also come across one of the most splendid stretch of beach known as Warwick Long Bay.

The Royal Navy Dockyard is also a fine place to spend an afternoon, whether browsing in shops that were once historic buildings, discovering a true Bermuda pub, or perhaps visiting the Bermuda Maritime Museum.

The sand really is pink, and the style is decidedly British in this Atlantic Ocean island gem a day a half by ship from the East Coast. Although some cruise ships call at Bermuda on the way to or from the Caribbean and Bahamas or Europe, most cruises to this island are single-destination journeys, giving vacationers several days to enjoy the many delights it offers while using their ship as a floating resort hotel.
