About Caicos Island
The Turks & Caicos consist of two sub-tropical islands in the West Indies. Considered to be one of the top ten diving destinations, both islands make of the third largest coral reef system in the world. The real attraction lies on the outskirts of the Islands, in the 230 total miles of breathtaking beaches. The activities of snorkeling and diving draw people from all over the world.
There are 8 inhabited islands which make up the Turks and Caicos: Salt Cay, Grand Turk, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Providenciales, Parrot Cay and Pine Cay. The capital island of Grand Turk (Cockburn Town), with the country’s second largest population, is a small island rich with historical charm and painted with attractive Colonial and Burmudian style architecture. The Caicos are the larger of the two islands, with almost 96 percent of the land area and 82 percent of the population. The Caicos Islands are arranged around the Caicos Bank with the six large islands in the west, north and east, and a few tiny reefs and cays in the south. The Caicos Bank itself is an underwater limestone bank. The area is made up of sand, mixed coral, algae, coral reefs and other habitats.
