About St. Croix Island
St. Croix is a colorful Island with a rich culture and colorful history. The handsome Island is scattered with stately 18th and 19th century buildings and 54 sugar mills are still standing. Coinciding with the attractive buildings are some of the whitest sand beaches and crystal emerald waters of the Caribbean. Besides its beauty St. Croix is full with a plethora of recreational activities for visitors with any interest.
About three years ago, cruise ships stopped coming to St. Croix, and since then, St. Croix has become a more desirable place to vacation because the costs on the Island have dropped. And, if you stay on St. Croix taking a trip to another nearby Island is easy by ferry or seaplane. For anyone considering a move to the Islands, St. Croix is an Island that should be strongly considered for its great location, and lower cost of living.
Christiansted & Fredereksted are the two main towns in St. Croix. Frederiksted is located on the west end of the Island, and is full of Victorian homes and 19th century churches. Here you’ll also find Fort Frederik and St. Croix’s sole lighthouse, built in the late 1800’s. The town of Christiansted was once the capital of the US Virgin Islands. Here you’ll find the Steeple building, a museum for Carib and Arawak Indian artifacts.
St. Croix is famous for its rum, and the Cruzan Rum Distillery located on the Island, which has been in the same spot for over 300 years, offers interesting guided tours which explain the rum making process as well as the history and importance of the distillery to the Island.
Along with rum, sugar has also played a big role in shaping the Island of St. Croix. The Estate Whim Plantation Museum, located on the west end of the Island, will educate visitors on the historical and cultural importance of the Islands sugar mills.
Recreational activities including snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, kayaking, biking, and horseback riding are readily available on the Island. In fact, the Island has a reputation for providing visitors with lots of fun and variant activity choices. St. Croix also has a casino for an entertaining night out.
Lying just one mile off St. Croix’s shore is Buck Island. The 800-acre natural preserve is one of the most popular attractions in the US Virgin Islands, and has an amazing underwater snorkeling trail. To get there, visitors can take a short ferry ride from St. Croix.
For a self guided driving tour that will take visitors to some great points of interest on the Island, the Heritage trail runs the whole 28 mile length of the Islands. Pick up a trail map that will point out cultural and historical landmarks as well as identify some of the Islands best views.
