About St. Lucia Island
The tiny Caribbean island of St. Lucia, with a South Pacific vibe and lush preserved habitat, is a vacation destination that knows very well the true meaning of relation. Only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, the island has two coastal peaks which rise up to 2,000 feet from sea level and dip into astounding tropical rainforest brimming with exotic fascinations like birds of paradise, wild orchids and the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. Spotting the rainforest are lovely field crops of plentiful tropical fruit trees.
Culturally, St. Lucia is also a masterpiece. With a population of warm and endearing people, and charming architecture visitors will want to meet, discover and indulge all they can while on the island. The islands colorful history is fun to explore, and many local traditions of modern day reflect on the islands past. Open air markets and small villages are still prevalent on the island, though comfortable resorts and fine dining is available to tourists.
Despite its small size, there are lots of things to do and places to see on St. Lucia. One of the most exceptional treats on the island is St. Lucia’s stunning Soufriere volcano, which is the only volcano you can drive into in the world. Just south of Soufriere is Malgretout Waterfall, a quiet and rich mineral waterfall where visitors can bathe in its soothing volcanic waters. The outstanding rainforest preserves provide great hiking with opportunity for bird watching and plant and animal identification. The dramatic drop-offs of the islands coastline provide prime snorkeling and diving.
Set on the harbor, Castries is the island capital and main commercial center. The city is filled with vendors which sell produce and handmade crafts. Unfortunately, after four major fires (the last in 1948) many of the city’s historical buildings are no longer around. Worth a visit though is Castries Catholic Cathedral. Built in 1897 the stone architecture is fascinating and provides an excellent depiction of Caribbean/African influences which are seen in a display of a black Jesus and Mary.
Beautiful Marigot Bay is a long sheltered bay that serves as a popular anchorage spot for boaters. Legend has it that because of its great size the entire British fleet once escaped the French by pulling their boats into Marigot Bay and coving their ships masts with palm tree fronds.
For more historical exploration, Pigeon Island National park holds ruins dating back from the mid 1700’s. Along with a spectacular forest there are also some great views of Martinique from the park.
