About Turks Island
Situated on the world’s top 10 diving destinations list, the Islands of the Turks & Caicos miles of exquisite coral reef make it the third largest coral reef system in the world. Though the land differs from most classic Caribbean destinations, covered with cactus, low brush, and acacia trees, there is no shortage of splendid Mother Nature throughout the archipelago. Her real attraction lies on the outskirts of the Islands, in the 230 total miles of breathtaking beaches and phenomenal snorkeling and diving which divers from across the world come to explore.
There are 8 inhabited islands which make up the Turks and Caicos: Salt Cay, Grand Turk, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Providenciales, Parrot Cay and Pine Cay. The capital island of Grand Turk, with the country’s second largest population, is a small island rich with historical charm and painted with attractive Colonial and Burmudian style architecture. As well as the capital, today the island is the country’s business and financial center. Cockburn Town is known as the administrative capital of the islands. Its fascinating historical landmarks and strong cultural presence make the town ideal for walking about and exploring all it has to offer up close and personal on foot. The Turks and Caicos National Museum, located in Cockburn, has a great exhibit on the Molasses Reef Wreck, a shipwreck from 1505, making it the oldest shipwreck ever found in the Western Hemisphere. But most visitors come here for the beaches and pristine diving sites! There are plenty of dive operators and instructors who can take visitors out to the protected coral reef which although only a short distance from the shore has an impressive drop of 8,000 feet. Favorite beaches include White Sands Beach and Waterloo.
